McDonald's has unveiled Archy, an artificial intelligence-powered voice system designed to handle drive-thru orders in both English and Spanish. The company demonstrated the technology during its investor day gathering at its Chicago base on 23 September.

According to McDonald's, Archy has demonstrated accuracy rates exceeding 90% during its initial testing phase. While the company has not disclosed the total number of participating locations, reporting from June indicated that five restaurants across the United States were running trials of the system.

Archy functions as a single component within ArchIQ, a broader generative AI infrastructure designed to streamline restaurant operations. The complete system performs additional functions including inventory management, visual monitoring of kitchen equipment through cameras, and weight-based verification mechanisms to ensure order accuracy before items leave the counter.

McDonald's claims that implementing these drive-thru technologies could free up more than 50 hours of labor per location each week. The company also projects that ArchIQ could reduce food waste by 15%.

The underlying infrastructure relies on Google Cloud edge computing devices positioned within individual restaurants. These systems handle data processing locally rather than sending information to remote servers. Thousands of McDonald's locations already have these edge computers installed, with the company targeting completion of the US rollout by 2027.

This represents McDonald's latest venture into AI-assisted ordering, following a previous experiment with IBM technology that concluded in June 2024. Competitors have already advanced further in this space, with Taco Bell currently operating voice AI ordering systems across more than 890 restaurants in the United States.

ArchIQ sits within McDonald's broader Next strategy, which encompasses approximately $8.5 billion in support directed toward franchisees through 2036. This funding covers rent assistance and capital for restaurant upgrades.

McDonald's plans to introduce ArchIQ capabilities in phases beginning in 2027, though the company has not announced a specific timeline for the complete rollout of Archy.
