StandardX, a nuclear technology company founded in 2025, has closed a £10 million seed round to advance its accelerator-based isotope refinery platform. Vsquared Ventures and East X Ventures led the investment, joined by firstminute capital, UKI2S (the UK Innovation and Science Seed Fund), Brevan Howard Macro Venture and Geometry.
The startup was established by CEO Richard Pearson and CTO Ross Allen, both nuclear engineers with experience in scaling companies. Their mission centres on building a more dependable and resilient European supply chain for critical rare materials through isotope production at commercial scale.
StandardX's core innovation is a proprietary accelerator system designed to consolidate isotope-specific production infrastructure into a single platform capable of manufacturing multiple isotope types from a standard industrial footprint. The approach enables distributed manufacturing, positioning isotope production facilities closer to end-users.
Isotopes play essential roles in healthcare, energy and industrial applications, yet global production depends on a handful of ageing facilities operating at limited capacity. The company is initially targeting isotopes used in cancer diagnosis and treatment, particularly those needed for targeted alpha therapies.
StandardX plans to deliver its first isotopes to a medical research partner in 2027, with pilot production and distribution commencing that same year. The company will support both established isotopes currently deployed in hospitals and emerging isotopes required by drug developers creating novel treatments, many of which lack commercial-scale availability today.
Isotopes underpin the next era of innovation across several key sectors, but all share the same constraints around supply. Shortages are most acute in cancer medicine, already impacting patients today, and stalling progress in the development of next-generation treatments. This problem will only get worse, with new cancer cases projected to increase 67% by 2050. So we're building the platform the world needs to address this
Richard Pearson, CEO of StandardX
Beyond medical applications, StandardX intends to leverage its accelerator platform to produce tritium, a fuel essential for fusion energy systems. The company has already signed agreements with fusion developers to supply tritium as they advance towards grid-connected fusion power generation.
The seed capital will fund team expansion, establishment of StandardX's first industrial site in London, and continued development and construction of the initial accelerator-based isotope refinery. Industrial-scale production is targeted to commence in 2029, following the 2027 pilot phase.
