Refinyx, a freshly launched Swedish firm, has secured recycling technology stemming from Northvolt's discontinued Revolt division and has already lined up its opening customer across the Atlantic. The venture was established by former leaders of Revolt, with financial support from investment house Qarlbo Energy.

The startup's initial asset haul includes 134 patents and a roughly 1,200-square-meter pilot and laboratory site located in Västerås that once served Northvolt. Refinyx intends to supply industrial partners with both technological solutions and engineering expertise to help them construct facilities capable of extracting vital raw materials. The identity of the inaugural U.S. customer remains undisclosed by the company.

Technology developed at Northvolt Revolt

The underlying processes were refined across eight years within Northvolt Revolt and were previously deployed at a commercial-scale recycling operation in Skellefteå. Refinyx's platform targets the recovery of nickel, cobalt, and lithium drawn from spent batteries, production byproducts, and other waste streams.

The methodology accomplishes material extraction without relying on organic solvents and circumvents several conventional intermediate processing phases. According to Refinyx, this approach enables facilities to operate with a smaller equipment footprint, lower chemical consumption, and reduced environmental impact.

Expansion to additional materials planned

The company intends to broaden its technological scope to encompass rare earth elements, phosphorus, and other materials deemed strategically important. Rather than functioning primarily as an operator of recycling plants, Refinyx aims to position itself as a partner enabling industrial operators to construct and scale their own recycling infrastructure.
