The base petrol 330 carries a $49,900 price tag and currently lacks an electric counterpart. BMW's new battery-powered 3 Series will debut in US dealerships during the opening months of 2027, offering an estimated maximum range of 468 miles.

BMW's inaugural electric 3 Series will retail for $4,400 less than the company's most potent combustion-engine variant in America. The 2027 i3 50 xDrive begins at $61,500, while the petrol M350 xDrive carries a $65,900 starting price, according to BMW's announcement as it commenced accepting US orders. Both figures do not include the $1,350 destination surcharge.

The eighth-generation 3 Series lineup now encompasses both electric and conventional powertrains. Analysis by TechCrunch calculated the electric model's cost advantage at 6.7%.

Complete pricing breakdown

The four-cylinder petrol 330 represents the entry point at $49,900. The all-wheel-drive variant, the 330 xDrive, costs $51,900. This positions the electric i3 at $11,600 above the cheapest option, which currently has no battery-powered equivalent.

All four initial launch configurations will reach American showrooms during the first quarter of 2027. A higher-performance i3 M60 xDrive variant is scheduled to arrive later that year, with pricing details to follow nearer to its launch date.

Comparing the top-tier models

The i3 50 xDrive employs dual electric motors generating 463 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque combined. BMW claims it accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The M350 xDrive relies on a 3.0-litre six-cylinder mild hybrid engine producing 437 horsepower, achieving the same acceleration benchmark in 3.9 seconds.

BMW projects the i3's driving range between 446 and 468 miles (718 to 753 kilometres), derived from preliminary evaluations conducted under EPA testing standards. When connected to a 400kW fast charger, the vehicle can recover 191 to 208 miles of range in a 10-minute charging session, according to the manufacturer.

The battery-powered sedan marks the first 3 Series generation constructed on BMW's Neue Klasse platform. Production takes place at the company's Munich facility. The conventional petrol variants incorporate a refined body and chassis architecture and will be manufactured in Dingolfing beginning in November. BMW's navigation system can optimize charging route planning around IONNA's network, its designated fast-charging partner in the United States.

Testing EV pricing dynamics

Direct price comparisons between electric and petrol vehicles prove challenging since not all battery-powered models have conventional counterparts, as TechCrunch highlighted. American EV pricing climbed in July for the first time during the year, as promotional incentives contracted.

BMW has already delivered two million electric vehicles globally. Jochen Goller, the board member overseeing sales operations, emphasized the strategic importance of the i3.
