At the JKU MED CAMPUS exhibition space, the Linz Institute of Technology (LIT) will present multiple art-and-science initiatives alongside investigations into interdisciplinary research happening in Linz, drawing on work from Johannes Kepler University (JKU).
A Game of Belonging—and the Price of Community
The work titled "Radical Gaming" investigates connections between gaming subcultures and the process through which young people become radicalized. Participants step into a digital environment featuring an online group that appears friendly and inclusive at first. As the experience unfolds, the welcoming facade reveals underlying systems of coercion, status competition and psychological manipulation. Created through collaboration among multiple artists, "Radical Gaming" demonstrates the construction of such narratives and suggests strategies for resistance.
Traces in the Dark—A Journey Through the Labyrinth as a Collective Work
Rather than navigating digital space, "13" by Alessandro Martinelli (IT) guides visitors through a completely darkened maze. Ultraviolet illumination and projected imagery distort spatial awareness and reality perception, generating disorientation and vertigo. At certain moments, the ground seems to vanish into infinite darkness immediately after passing through a large pivoting barrier. Using UV-reactive markers, participants inscribe luminous marks upon the dark surfaces, thereby becoming active contributors to the labyrinth's perpetually evolving design.
Tea and Trust—When Robotics Extends the Body
"SPILLING THE TEA? – A Soft Material Experience" by Sandra Maria Siedl (AT) and Sophie Skach (AT) welcomes visitors into a more intimate space: an unconventional tea salon. Participants can don knitted exo-gloves and manipulate cups, pots and other items using them. Through this interactive experience, visitors discover how textile-based wearable robotics can augment hand capability while simultaneously constraining it. The glove serves as a springboard for examining themes of reliance, agency and the dynamic between people and machines.
The Commercial Interests Behind CAPTCHAs
"CAPTCHA to capture" requires participants to demonstrate their humanity by accurately sorting and identifying visual content on a screen. Though this verification process feels routine in digital contexts, it simultaneously harvests significant information valuable to multinational corporations. Through an interactive art piece containing unexpected twists, Ylvie Moschitz (AT), Johannes Grafinger (AT), Jan Schlüter (DE) and Barış Ulaş (DK) render these typically invisible dynamics visible and comprehensible.
Genes as a Responsive Process—On Human Behavior
"Show Me Your Face: The Power of Becoming" by Johannes Pröll (AT), Mihaela Kavdanska (BG/AT), Rupert Huber (AT), Dilmana Yordanova (BG/RO), and Daniel Gontz (RO/NL) challenges the conventional scientific view that biology alone determines human conduct. An audiovisual experience guides visitors through multiple dimensions of human identity. A central premise of the work proposes that genetic material functions not as an unchanging template, but as a dynamic system continuously responding to surrounding conditions.
Tech-Bro-Topia—Whose Future Is Being Designed?
Ars Electronica has consistently served as a venue for critical conversation and intellectual exchange. The discussion "Tech-Bro-Topia," featured within the LIT—Linz Institute of Technology Exhibition, scrutinizes the future scenarios promoted by leading technology entrepreneurs and their consequences for civilization and ecosystems. A symposium combining featured presentations and an international roundtable assembles diverse viewpoints. Speaking participants include cultural and media scholar Alison Winch (UK), programmer Aya Jaff (DE) and political scientist Arnaud Miranda (FR).
Impact Initiative: Rethinking Medicine
Emerging technologies are fundamentally altering approaches to wellness and medical care. As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly prevalent, the central question shifts beyond technical feasibility. The inquiry now encompasses how AI is transforming our very conception of health itself. Which knowledge systems should guide tomorrow's medical practice? Whose perspectives receive consideration—and whose remain excluded? What characterizes excellent care?
The "Impact Initiative: Transforming Medicine Through AI and Arts" from the Open Innovation in Science Center of the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft convenes science, art, technology and diverse community perspectives to examine these questions collaboratively. In "Intimate Triage" by Emanuel Gollob (AT), Jan Smeddinck (DE), Misagh Saboori (IR) and Pavithren V S Pakianathan (SG), individual visitors encounter both a humanoid robot and a human medical professional in unscripted interactions. Each meeting develops organically, exposing what transpires when the conventional dynamic between caregiver and patient becomes uncertain. Who possesses decision-making power? Who carries accountability? And whom do we rely upon when technology enters the realm of care?
From Personal to Planetary Suffering
The cross-disciplinary initiative P.A.I.N. (Personal And Interconnected with Nature) by the PAIN Collective (AT, GR, HK, US) merges art, AI and network science to examine suffering through fresh lenses. How does individual suffering connect to the environmental and social crises confronting our world? Can we examine personal loss alongside ecological extinction together? Visitors may share their own experiences of pain, which AI algorithms then connect to planetary-scale suffering. The resulting interactive three-dimensional visualization renders both individual and global dimensions of pain tangible: the Personal-Planetary-Pain Map, accessible at p-a-i-n.world.
When Collaboration Opens Up New Perspectives
