Panasonic Energy has inaugurated the Energy Innovation Square, a dedicated research and development facility for lithium-ion batteries situated in Kadoma, Japan. The facility brings together previously dispersed development work—spanning material innovation, cell design, and prototype manufacturing—under one roof.
The site employs approximately 500 staff across product planning, technology development, and analysis functions. Spanning roughly 24,500 square meters across six floors, the center houses operations in materials development, prototyping, and lithium-ion cell analysis.
Streamlining the Path to Production
Previously, development and prototyping operations were distributed across multiple locations. By consolidating these functions at the Kadoma site, Panasonic Energy expects to minimize inter-facility transportation and associated delays. The company projects that this reorganization will reduce development lead times for relevant process steps by at least 15%.
A new digital infrastructure layer will integrate data generated by simulation models with results from physical testing. The company anticipates that process monitoring and statistical analysis capabilities will drive continuous refinement of simulation models and cell design methodologies.
Scaling Technologies for Global Production and Emerging Applications
Technologies and manufacturing processes refined at the Kadoma facility are slated for deployment across Panasonic Energy's international production network, particularly at facilities in Nevada and Kansas.
The consolidation reflects shifting market demands for battery storage solutions. Electric vehicles require batteries optimized for high capacity and longevity, whereas AI data centers prioritize high power delivery. Beyond these established markets, Panasonic Energy identifies drones, robotaxis, and humanoid robots as emerging applications that will drive future battery development priorities.
