Anthropic has folded Cowork, its dedicated workspace for extended tasks, directly into Claude's primary interface. The move eliminates the need for users to manually select between chat and task modes—Claude will now autonomously determine whether a request requires a conversational response or a longer agentic workflow.
Alongside this integration, Anthropic is introducing Claude Docs and Claude Slides, two new collaborative editors currently available in beta for paying subscribers. The company announced these changes in a blog post on Wednesday.
Cowork launched in January as a separate environment designed for work requiring multiple interactions, such as processing batches of files or generating comprehensive reports. Anthropic determined that users found the dual-interface approach confusing and opted to streamline the experience.
The unified Claude now incorporates capabilities that were previously exclusive to Cowork, including task decomposition, tool integration, and background processing. Users retain the ability to establish boundaries on Claude's autonomous actions before requiring manual approval.
Claude Docs and Claude Slides enable the model to generate documents and presentations that teams can collaboratively modify in real time. Both tools operate through a single shareable link accessible on desktop and mobile platforms. Anthropic supports exporting to Google Workspace formats, PowerPoint, and PDF.
Claude Design, which Anthropic introduced in April using Canva's design infrastructure, will transition from a standalone tool into the main conversation flow. Claude Code, the developer-focused tool, will maintain its separate status.
Pro and Max tier subscribers will receive these updates across web, desktop, and mobile interfaces within the coming weeks. Team and Free plan users will gain access at a later date. Enterprise customers will receive a minimum 30-day notice before deployment.
This consolidation represents an ongoing effort by Anthropic. Last month, the company unified memory functionality between chat and Cowork, allowing information shared in either context to be accessible across both.
Anthropic's strategy mirrors OpenAI's approach from July, when OpenAI merged ChatGPT with its Codex coding agent into a unified desktop application and introduced a Work mode targeting knowledge professionals. Both organizations are pursuing office workers seeking complete document and presentation creation rather than chat-based answers alone.
The new editing suite positions Anthropic in direct competition with established productivity software. Claude Docs and Claude Slides function similarly to Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 offerings. Anthropic has also integrated Claude into Word and prioritized compatibility with these enterprise platforms through export functionality.
