AMD has announced plans to acquire World Labs, the artificial intelligence startup founded by Fei-Fei Li, through an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion. The deal, disclosed on Monday, will see Li assume the role of executive vice president and chief scientist at AMD, with direct reporting to CEO Lisa Su. Regulatory approval is required, and AMD expects the transaction to finalize by the end of 2026.
Following the acquisition's completion, World Labs will continue its focus on AI model research as part of AMD. Co-founders Justin Johnson and Ben Mildenhall are expected to maintain their leadership positions within the team alongside Li, according to World Labs.
World Labs' Technology and Background
Operating from San Francisco, World Labs specializes in spatial intelligence models capable of generating, reconstructing and simulating interactive three-dimensional environments derived from text, images and video. The company's technology extends to robot learning and simulation capabilities. Among its offerings is Marble, a product that constructs 3D worlds from various input formats, and Atlas, a newer model designed to forecast alternative camera perspectives from two-dimensional images, according to Li.
Li established World Labs in early 2024 alongside Johnson and Mildenhall, serving as the company's chief executive. Her previous accomplishments include leading research that produced the ImageNet dataset and serving as founding director of Stanford's Human-Centered AI institute. The development of world models—AI systems that learn to comprehend physical world mechanics—represents a broader trend across the industry.
In February, World Labs secured $1 billion in funding, with AMD and Nvidia identified as investors alongside Autodesk, Emerson Collective, Fidelity and Sea.
Strategic Rationale Behind the Acquisition
AMD characterizes the current AI landscape as increasingly focused on reasoning, robotics, simulation and physical AI applications, each presenting distinct computational requirements. The company views World Labs' expertise in model development as instrumental for understanding how AI workloads are shifting and for informing its technology development strategies going forward.

Li noted that Su had invested in World Labs at an early stage. The organizations initiated a technical collaboration the previous year, concentrating on model training and inference operations utilizing AMD graphics processing units.

This acquisition follows AMD's August purchase of Taalas, a company specializing in integrating AI models directly into silicon. In July, AMD announced a $5 billion investment commitment to Anthropic.
